Hunted down by a swarm of pinkish and belligerent spaghetti-like alien worms, a creature launches itself into a frantic escape through space-time aboard its flying saucer. It ends up on a planet ruled by a dystopian society and dominated by two food industry giants and their kawaï logos. When one of the two firms decides to appropriate the alien’s technology in order to take the lead on its competitor, the commercial war between them turns into a bloodbath. A daydreaming employee and a sensitive robot, on different sides of the conflict, find themselves used to conduct terrorist operations. Meanwhile, the threat of the alien worms looms over the city. It’s gonna be a long day.
In this wordless comic book and its retro-futuristic aesthetics, Lucas Varela depicts a world where state, industry and media have joined forces to control a consumer citizenry, force-fed with junk food and inept contents. He also stages a wild story tinged with slapstick and dark humor.
His characters recall those of silent cinema, unwillingly sucked up, mistreated and thrown into action.
First published by Fantagraphics, this story is now reprinted in a revised version and enriched by around thirty new pages, in a generous format which fully highlights Varela’s sense of detail.
